MSF: Sudan faces worsening cholera outbreak

August 18, 2025 (PEN) Doctors Without Borders warned that Sudan is facing a "worsening cholera outbreak," noting that "the situation has become acute in Darfur," where population movements caused by insecurity have "exacerbated pressures on resources, with many arriving injured, malnourished, and lacking basic needs."

The organization said in a statement that approximately 380,000 people living in the Tawila area after fleeing fighting in El Fasher have an average water consumption of no more than 3 liters per day, forcing them to use contaminated sources and increasing the risk of cholera.

MSF called on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and healthcare providers to "intensify screening, vaccination, health education, medical care, and safe drinking water provision in camps, including across the border in South Sudan and Chad."
