OCHA: At least 5,178 suspected cases of cholera have been reported

December 5, 2023 (pen) The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that Sudan had declared a cholera outbreak on September 26. At least 5,178 suspected cases of cholera have been reported, including 161 associated deaths.

The office stated that cholera had spread in 46 local areas in the states of Gezira, Blue Nile, Gedaref, Kassala, Khartoum, Red Sea, Sennar, South Kordofan and White Nile.
OCHA added that humanitarian agencies are working to expand the response to the outbreak and support the detection and treatment of cases.
The Office of Humanitarian Affairs said that surveillance is continuing in the affected and high-risk areas to identify and address risk factors.
The office stated that oral vaccination campaigns against cholera were organized in the states of Gedaref and Al-Jazira, reaching 98% of the targeted 2.2 million people.
