Abu al-Ghaith warns of Sudan's approach to a state of total civil war

7 September 2023(pen) - The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Ghayd, warned that Sudan is approaching a state of total civil war. "We don't want Sudan and its people to slip into it," he said.

This came during his speech at the opening session of the Council of the Arab League at the ministerial level.

Abu al-Ghaydh said that the crisis in Sudan is still unfolding, leaving a huge cost beyond the possibility for the Sudanese people. He added that as the fighting continues, the number of people fleeing increases and life becomes impossible for the civilian population.

The Secretary-General stated that they recognize that what is needed now is urgent action to achieve a comprehensive solution to the crisis, which requires the beginning of a sustainable ceasefire in all Sudanese cities. In a way that paves the way for a return to the political track.

He said that despite the priority and urgency of these goals, they put the urgent humanitarian response at the forefront of their priorities.

The conflict in Sudan since April 15 between the armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces has killed more than 5,000 people and displaced millions, according to United Nations reports.
