The World Food Programme warns of the risk of famine in areas south of Khartoum.

June 10, 2025 (PEN) The World Food Programme reported that several areas south of the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, are facing the risk of famine, as the need on the ground exceeds available resources amid a severe shortage in funding for food aid to war-affected areas.

The program's director in Sudan, Laurent Bokera, emphasized that the levels of hunger, poverty, and despair in these areas are extreme, pointing to the need for urgent action to prevent the crisis from worsening.

The UN food agency also stated that it was able to reach one million people in seven localities in Khartoum, after receiving official permission to enter the capital.

The agency noted that the ongoing conflict in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces has displaced millions and divided the country into areas of competing control, making it more difficult to deliver humanitarian aid.

In this context, reports confirmed that Jebel Awliya is among the areas facing severe hunger, while a lack of funding has led to a reduction in oil and legume rations in food distribution operations, with the program announcing a financial deficit of $500 million.

Bukera stressed that nutritional supplements for children, pregnant and lactating women are out of reach due to a lack of resources, warning of dire consequences if the necessary support is not provided.
