The United Nations expresses concern over the continued targeting of civilian infrastructure in Sudan.

June 1, 2025 (PEN) The acting UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Kristin Hambrooke, expressed grave concern over the recent wave of attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in Sudan, describing them as a "flagrant violation of international humanitarian law."

Hambrook noted in a statement that the International Security Hospital in El Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan State, was attacked by a drone on May 30, reportedly killing six health workers and wounding more than 15 others. Hambrook emphasized that "hospitals are not battlefields, but rather places dedicated to treatment and hope, and are protected under international law."

It also condemned the attack on the World Food Programme headquarters in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, on May 29, which caused extensive damage to a major humanitarian hub.

Hambrook added that "humanitarian facilities are essential to sustaining life amid a worsening humanitarian crisis, and targeting them puts the lives of millions at risk," noting that reports indicate that both attacks were carried out by the Rapid Support Forces.

She concluded by calling for an immediate halt to these attacks, stressing the need for all parties to the conflict to respect their obligations under international humanitarian law and hold accountable all those who target civilians and humanitarian facilities.
