The United Nations warns: The humanitarian situation in El Fasher is worsening under siege.

September 30, 2025 (PEN) The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned that the humanitarian situation in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur state, is deteriorating day by day as the siege imposed on the city intensifies.

According to the UN office, satellite imagery shows that the earthen berms surrounding the city now extend for more than 68 kilometers, reducing the remaining gap to no more than three or four kilometers, restricting movement options in and out of the area.

Images also show large groups of people trying to flee on foot from within the berm-enclosed area. Local sources report that civilians attempting to leave the city have faced violence, harassment, and looting along unsafe roads.

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reiterated its call for the protection of civilians in El Fasher under international humanitarian law and for safe passage for those wishing to leave the city.

Meanwhile, a Sudanese Doctors Association reported that more than 20 people in El Fasher—including children and pregnant women—have died from malnutrition this month alone. The United Nations stated that these tragic deaths highlight the urgent need for humanitarian access to deliver life-saving aid to the besieged population.
