The African Union affirms that a Sudanese-led political solution is the only way to end the crisis.

August 4, 2025 (PEN) - The African Union Peace and Security Council, during its meeting in Addis Ababa on Monday, affirmed that "an inclusive Sudanese-led political process represents the only way to end the current crisis," warning that civilians will remain the primary victims unless concrete steps are taken to stop the fighting.

Representatives of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) participated in the meeting, along with Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, the African Union High Representative for the Transitional African Coordination Group and Chair of the High-Level Committee on Sudan, and Dr. Haneed Nuru of the World Food Programme.

According to the briefings, the participants discussed the deteriorating situation on the ground in Darfur and Kordofan, stressing the need to de-escalate the military situation, increase humanitarian assistance, and protect Sudan's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The Council stressed the importance of enhancing coordination between international and regional parties to unify peace efforts, noting that the African Union has established three main mechanisms to support the peace process in Sudan: the expanded mechanism to secure coordinated international support, the high-level committee overseeing the roadmap, and the Peace and Security Council's special committee, which communicates with the warring parties to ensure a ceasefire and secure humanitarian corridors.
