The World Health Organization condemns the targeting of the International Security Hospital in El Obeid.

May 31, 2025 (PEN) - The Director-General of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, expressed his deep shock at the deadly attack on the Al-Daman International Hospital in El Obeid, North Kordofan State, which reportedly killed six health workers and injured others.

"We are shocked by yet another deadly attack on the Daman International Hospital in Sudan," Ghebreyesus said in a statement on the X platform. "Attacks on health facilities must stop. We demand the protection of all health infrastructure and health workers," he added, adding, "The best medicine is peace."

In the same context, the Preparatory Committee of the Sudanese Doctors Syndicate strongly condemned what it described as the "heinous crime" committed by the Rapid Support Forces, who targeted the hospital yesterday morning. The attack resulted in the deaths of six people, the injury of more than 10 others, the destruction of parts of the hospital, and its complete shutdown.

The committee noted that this attack comes less than two weeks after the bombing of the city's military hospital, which was again bombed today, in a repeated and blatant violation of all international laws and norms that criminalize the targeting of medical facilities.

The statement added, "The deliberate targeting of health facilities constitutes a full-fledged war crime and underscores the systematic behavior of these militias to exacerbate civilian suffering and destroy the health sector, amid the catastrophic humanitarian conditions the country has been experiencing since the outbreak of the war."

The committee concluded its statement by renewing its call to the international community and UN organizations to take urgent action and exert pressure to protect healthcare workers and civilians, and to hold accountable those responsible for the repeated crimes against Sudan's healthcare sector.
