Norwegian Refugee Council: Gedaref market receives those fleeing Sennar amid the worsening crisis

July 8, 2024 (PEN) The Norwegian Refugee Council said that footage taken on Saturday of the Gedaref market, which has been turned into a reception site for families displaced from Sennar, shows the scale of the humanitarian crisis in the region. The council added that more than 135,000 people were forced to flee last week due to escalating violence and conflict. He explained that these displaced people are in urgent need of clean water, access to latrines, food, medical care, shelter and basic household supplies.

The Council stated that this is not the first time that many of these displaced people have been forced to flee and leave everything behind, but rather it is the second or third time for many of them. He pointed out that Norwegian Refugee Council colleagues are on the ground and providing support with funding from European humanitarian institutions.
