The case of martyr Ahmed Al-Khair returns to the forefront with a controversial appointment in Kassala.

September 22 , 2025 (PEN) The Sudanese Teachers' Committee in Kassala State rejected the appointment of Professor Hassan Ahmed Mohamed Hamroun as Director of Education in Kassala Locality, considering the decision a "setback to the value of justice" due to his association with the case of the martyr Ahmed Al-Khair.

The committee said in a statement that Hamroun had lured the martyr Al-Khair on January 27, 2019, to arrest and torture him until his death on February 2 of the same year. This incident shook Sudanese public opinion and became a symbol of the December Revolution.

The statement added that a subsequent trial resulted in the conviction of 27 members of the security apparatus and their sentencing to death by hanging, "but the sentences have not yet been carried out."

The committee asserted that Hamroun's appointment to a leadership position in education represents "a stab in the back of the neck for teachers and generations who dreamed of a state of justice, freedom, and peace," warning of the repercussions of the decision for social and educational stability in Kassala.
