WHO Director-General regrets destruction of mycetoma center in Khartoum

April 30, 2025 (PEN ) - Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, expressed his deep regret over the destruction of the Mycetoma Research Center in Khartoum due to the war, noting that the center is the only one of its kind that has been collaborating with the organization on mycetoma and neglected tropical skin diseases since 2015.

Adhanom explained that he visited the center in 2018, when it was providing care to more than 8,000 patients from Africa, Asia, and other regions, describing the center as a "unique institution" in its field.

"Every act of destruction has immediate and long-term consequences on people's health and lives," he said, calling for an end to attacks on health institutions and facilities, concluding his statement by emphasizing: "Stop the fire!"
