11 Sudanese migrants and a Libyan driver killed in a horrific traffic accident in the Libyan desert.

May 31, 2025 (PEN) Eleven Sudanese migrants and a Libyan driver were killed in a tragic traffic accident that occurred early Friday morning, about 90 kilometers north of the city of Kufra, southeastern Libya, according to the city's emergency and ambulance authority.

The authority explained, in a press release, that the accident resulted from a truck colliding with a vehicle carrying Sudanese migrants who were trying to flee the civil war in their country.

The head of the authority, Ibrahim Abu al-Hassan, confirmed to the Associated Press that the dead included three women and two children, while a 65-year-old man and his 10-year-old son sustained moderate injuries and were taken to hospital for treatment.

This incident is the latest in a series of tragedies affecting Sudanese migrants. Earlier this May, seven Sudanese migrants were found dead in a remote area after their vehicle broke down on a route used by smugglers between Chad and Libya, while 34 others were left stranded for days in the desert without food or water.
