UN Commissioner: Sudan is sinking into chaos and serious violations are being committed without accountability.

June 16, 2025 (PEN) Volker Türk, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, warned during his address to the 59th session of the Human Rights Council that Sudan is sinking deeper into chaos and the absence of the rule of law, without receiving the necessary international attention.

Türk confirmed that hostilities had escalated in North Darfur and Kordofan, witnessing serious violations of international humanitarian law and human rights law. He noted that his office documented a tripling of arbitrary killings of civilians between February and April, most of which resulted from summary executions carried out by the Sudanese Armed Forces against alleged collaborators in Khartoum.

Türk expressed his deep concern about the situation in El Fasher, which has been under siege by the Rapid Support Forces for more than a year, expressing his shock at the widespread sexual violence, including against children, and attacks on humanitarian workers.

He called on the international community to push for a political solution, stop the flow of weapons, and curb commercial interests fueling the conflict, stressing the need to hold all parties accountable.
