In remarkable statements, Brazilian Matheus Cunha revealed the behind-the-scenes details of the difficult period Manchester United went through under the leadership of Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim, stressing that excessive pressure hastened the failure of the tactical plan.

Statements

Brazilian Matheus Cunha asserted that the amount of pressure and criticism directed at coach Ruben Amorim during his time with Manchester United made his tactical approach “doomed to failure” from the start.

Amorim had arrived at Old Trafford with a distinguished record with the 3-4-2-1 formation, but the style did not adapt quickly to the demands of the Premier League, and his adherence to the formation intensified the criticism.

“The pressure to make this plan succeed was so great that we forgot the simplicity of the overall context and focused too much on the negatives,” Konya told DAZN.

He added that the team still uses parts of the same tactical formation, but without the previous media hype, noting that “the numbers of the plans in football can be misleading, we attack in different ways, and in the end we defend in the way that everyone describes as Robben’s style.”

Praise for Amorim's role in the current uprising

Despite the criticism, Cunha stressed that Amorim played an important role in building the team, which currently occupies fourth place under interim coach Michael Carrick, after achieving four wins and a draw in five matches, including victories over Arsenal and Manchester City.

He explained: “I was always grateful for everything Robin did. It’s easy after a change to look at the past as a problem, but the truth is the opposite. He was a wonderful person.”

He noted that a number of important deals came with the support of Amorim, including Brian Mbeumo in addition to Cunha himself.

Dressing room renovation

The Portuguese coach also received praise for his role in improving the atmosphere in the dressing room, following a turbulent period after the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the criticisms made by Ralf Rangnick regarding the club's situation.

Amorim made bold decisions to reshape the team, including the departure of prominent names such as Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho, as he sought to build a team that aligned with his tactical philosophy.

Cunha concluded by emphasizing that the strong relationship Amorim had built with the players was the cornerstone of the current improvement that Carrick is benefiting from, as confidence returns to Old Trafford.
