US: Sudan's warring parties approach direct talks

September 25, 2025 (PEN) US Presidential Advisor for African Affairs, Masad Boulos, announced that the warring parties in Sudan are close to holding "direct talks" to end one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

Speaking to reporters in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Paulos explained that Washington is holding discussions with the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces to reach general principles for negotiations. He noted that the current situation shows that neither side has the upper hand, making them willing to negotiate, according to Bloomberg.

He added that the Rapid Support Forces had agreed to allow humanitarian aid trucks into the besieged city of El Fasher in Darfur, and that some supplies had already begun arriving. He confirmed that the situation was currently evolving during the ongoing discussions.

Despite previous unsuccessful attempts, the US envoy expressed cautious hope that the warring parties would soon sit at the negotiating table to find a comprehensive political solution, given the current balance of power between the two sides compared to recent months.
