IGAD calls for coordination of international efforts to achieve peace in Sudan

June 21, 2024 (PEN) Dr. Workneh Gebeho, Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), confirmed that the conflict in Sudan continues to escalate after fifteen months of intense fighting, despite continued efforts by IGAD, the African Union and international actors. To facilitate a ceasefire.

During a briefing to the African Union Peace and Security Council, chaired by Mr. Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, Dr. Gebeho stressed the importance of coordinating peace efforts among Sudan’s partners and friends. He stressed the need to give priority to the Sudanese people, who have suffered greatly as a result of this ongoing conflict.

Dr. Gebeho pointed to IGAD's firm commitment to finding a path to peace for their Sudanese brothers, expressing his belief that there is hope for reaching a peaceful solution despite the tragic year that has passed for Sudan.
