WFP: One in three children in Sudan suffers from severe malnutrition

January 20, 2025 (Middle East) The United Nations World Food Programme said today (Sunday) that one in three children faces severe malnutrition in Sudan, which puts the country on the brink of famine.

The World Food Programme stressed that the need to support individuals in Sudan is more important today than ever before.

War broke out in Sudan between the army and the Rapid Support Forces in April 2023, after a dispute over plans to integrate the Rapid Support Forces into the armed forces, during a political process to transition to civilian rule. The conflict began in Khartoum and quickly spread to other areas.

The war has caused the world's largest refugee crisis and put many areas of Sudan on the brink of famine.

Famine has spread to five regions in Sudan, according to UN agencies based on the recently released Integrated Food Security Progress Report, which is supported by the United Nations.
