The United Nations warns of escalating violence against civilians in Darfur and Kordofan.

The United Nations has called for the protection of civilians in the affected areas of Sudan (social media).

6 January 2026 (PEN) The United Nations expressed grave concern over the continuing suffering of civilians amid escalating violence, particularly in the Darfur and Kordofan regions of Sudan.

UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told the daily press briefing that in North Darfur, drone strikes on January 3 reportedly caused civilian casualties in the villages of Zarq and Ghurair, including the targeting of a market and a medical clinic.

He added that on the same day, in West Darfur State, reports indicated that one civilian was killed in two drone attacks in the Kulbus locality, which led to the displacement of more than 600 people.

The UN spokesperson explained that in South Kordofan state, multiple drone attacks between January 1 and 3 in Dilling resulted in civilian deaths and injuries.

He stressed that "the situation in the city remains dire, with civilians trapped and the humanitarian situation continuing to deteriorate as restrictions on access to basic supplies increase."

Dujarric reiterated the call for the protection of civilians and for facilitating unhindered access for humanitarian aid to all affected areas.
He stressed that the continued and regular delivery of humanitarian aid is essential to providing life-saving assistance and preventing further deterioration of the humanitarian situation.

The United Nations had previously revealed that since the start of the war in Sudan on April 15, 2023, more than 11 million people have been displaced inside and outside the country, with a large proportion of them living in overcrowded camps or remote towns suffering from shortages of food, medicine and clean water.
