The United Nations allocates $10 million to support those fleeing to South Sudan

January 16, 2024 (PEN) UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Coordinator Martin Griffiths announced the allocation of $10 million from the Central Emergency Response Fund to support those fleeing Sudan to South Sudan.

Official spokesman Stephane Dujarric confirmed that the funds will be used to build shelters and water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, and cash assistance and ongoing transportation support will also be provided to new arrivals residing in overcrowded transit sites.

The United Nations expected thousands of people to cross into South Sudan during the next six months, which confirms the regime is under pressure.

Stephane Dujarric explained that half a million people have crossed the border into South Sudan since mid-April, including sixty thousand who arrived in South Sudan after the clashes in Wad Madani.
