UN: 17 areas in Sudan threatened by famine

August 14, 2025 (PEN) The spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stéphane Dujarric, said that the famine confirmed a year ago in the Zamzam camp in North Darfur state has since spread to areas in Darfur and Kordofan, noting that 17 areas are currently classified as "at risk of famine," including parts of Darfur, the Nuba Mountains, Khartoum, and Al-Jazeera.

Dujarric explained that the situation has particularly deteriorated in El Fasher, which is facing the threat of famine amid a complete disruption of humanitarian aid. He noted that the World Food Programme has warned that some residents there are living on animal feed and food waste.

He noted that the World Food Programme continues to provide digital cash support to approximately 250,000 people in the city to purchase the remaining food supplies in the markets, but stressed the need to address the hunger crisis on a scale commensurate with the scale of the disaster.

Dujarric reiterated the United Nations' concern over the ongoing conflict in Sudan, calling on all parties to end the violence, engage in dialogue, and put the interests of the people above all other considerations.
