IGAD Executive Secretary Condemns Violence in Darfur

October 28, 2025 (PEN) The Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), Dr. Workneh Gebeyehu, expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation in El Fasher, following reports that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) had taken control of the city.

In a statement today, Gebeyehu affirmed that the suffering of civilians in Sudan must end, calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and emphasizing that all parties bear a legal and moral responsibility to respect international humanitarian law and ensure unhindered access to humanitarian aid.

He also strongly condemned the violence against civilians and called on regional and international partners to take urgent action to support humanitarian efforts and promote dialogue to achieve comprehensive and lasting peace in Sudan.

"IGAD affirms its readiness to support all serious efforts aimed at ending the fighting and ensuring the protection of civilians," he concluded.
