German Foreign Ministry: Famine in Sudan is an unprecedented humanitarian disaster

August 4, 2024 (PEN) The German Foreign Ministry said the famine in Sudan is a humanitarian disaster of unprecedented proportions, caused by the conflict between the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces. The ministry said hundreds of thousands of people are at risk of starvation, and many have already died of hunger.

According to the statement, internally displaced persons, most of whom are women and children, are suffering particularly in the face of this crisis. Germany has already allocated 110 million euros to support those affected, and will continue to fund aid.

The ministry added that Germany's partners, such as the World Food Programme, World Hunger Aid and the German Red Cross, are using the funds to distribute food to young children, pregnant women, school children and people seeking shelter in refugee camps and internally displaced persons camps.
