The Red Cross and the Sudanese Red Crescent inaugurate a collective kitchen in El Fasher

13 September 2023 (Pen) – The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), in cooperation with the Sudanese Red Crescent Society, launched a communal kitchen this week in El Fasher in Sudan's North Darfur state, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said.

According to the ICRC, the project aims to provide meals to 3,000 displaced people living in different schools in the city. The kitchen will provide two meals a day until the end of this month to meet the needs of the neediest communities.

"The ongoing hostilities in Sudan have displaced thousands of families, who rely on relatives and humanitarian aid to meet their basic needs. Most of them are without livelihoods and unable to meet their food needs in light of the limited daily employment opportunities necessary for survival."

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said efforts were continuing to extend the project to other conflict-affected communities in the country in areas where supply delivery was severely difficult.

According to the ICRC, in cooperation with the Sudanese Red Crescent, it distributed food aid and household items last month to 10,500 displaced people in Darfur and Gezira state.
