Russia warns the Security Council against a repeat of atrocities in Sudan.

October 30, 2025 (PEN) Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vassily Nebenzia, expressed his country’s concern about reports of widespread human rights violations, describing violence against civilians, particularly on ethnic grounds, as “unacceptable.”

Nebenzia said during a session of the UN Security Council dedicated to discussing the situation in Sudan in light of the escalation in El Fasher that "the atrocities committed by the rebels against the civilian population in El Fasher, and the images circulating on the internet in this regard, are shocking," noting the recurrence of similar atrocities in the cities of El Geneina and El Gezira.

The Russian delegate added that the members of the Council should not doubt the possibility of such practices being repeated in areas outside the control of the Sudanese government, pointing to reports of increasing numbers of foreign fighters in the ranks of the Rapid Support Forces, including individuals coming from areas far from Sudan.

Nebenzia stressed that the only way to end the crisis in Sudan is to spread stability, impose order and have unified central government institutions, warning that any alternative path "will lead to an escalation of violence."

He also called for allowing humanitarian aid to reach those in need, stressing the need to continue close coordination with the Sudanese government regarding the distribution of relief.

Nebenzia argued that any attempts to equate the two sides of the conflict or to question the legitimacy of the Sudanese government would only contribute to deepening the division, calling on members of the Council to focus on positive engagement and providing tangible support to the Sudanese people instead of "fueling divisions".
