UN Fund: A quarter of Sudan's population faces the risk of gender-based violence

September 17, 2025 (Pen) The United Nations Population Fund announced that approximately 12.1 million people in Sudan, equivalent to a quarter of the population, are at risk of gender-based violence, warning of a worsening humanitarian crisis in the country.

The fund explained in a tweet on the X platform that this percentage represents a shocking 200% increase in just one year, stressing that "violence on this scale calls for urgent action from the international community to protect women and girls."

The UN warning comes amid escalating armed conflict in Sudan and deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions, which exacerbate the risks facing the most vulnerable groups.
