Guterres expresses concern over move to form 'parallel government' in Sudan

February 20, 2025 (PEN) The United Nations has warned that the announcement of a parallel government in Sudan threatens to " exacerbate the ongoing crisis" in the country.
The spokesman for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, expressed his concern about the announcement scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, of the formation of a parallel government by the Rapid Support Forces, which would increase the "division" of Sudan and "exacerbate the crisis."

"We are deeply concerned about any further escalation of the conflict in Sudan, and any such action would further divide the country and risk exacerbating the crisis," Stephane Dujarric said in a statement on Wednesday.

He stressed that "preserving Sudan's unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity remains an essential element in reaching a permanent solution to the conflict and in long-term stability for the country and the region."
