International committee: Sudan tops global emergency list as war completes 1,000 days

The International Rescue Committee indicated a 50% collapse in funding (Al-Rakoba)

January 8, 2026 (PEN) The International Rescue Committee (IRC) confirmed that Sudan topped its global "Emergency Watch List" for the third year in a row, warning of a collapse in international support and a worsening of the world's largest humanitarian crisis, coinciding with the 1,000th day since the outbreak of armed conflict.

The committee's vice chairman for emergency affairs, Bob Kitchen, attributed this deterioration to what he described as "a thousand days of failure," noting after his visit to Darfur that El Fasher had become a grim symbol of the country's descent into the abyss, amid horrific reports of executions, sexual violence and forced recruitment.

The committee explained in its 2026 report that the conflict had turned into a comprehensive humanitarian catastrophe, as health systems and water networks collapsed, and epidemics swept through overcrowded displacement sites, at a time when humanitarian needs sharply exceeded available resources.

The report indicated that Sudan has become a manifestation of the “new world order,” noting that the warring parties benefit from the continuation of the conflict, and that diplomatic efforts have faltered as a result of the failure of ceasefire agreements and the fragmentation of mediation, while also noting that humanitarian funding has collapsed by 50%, threatening the lives of millions.
