An international committee announces that more than 500 families were affected by a fire in Tawila.

The fire affected hundreds of shelters in a camp for displaced people in Tawila (Darfur 24).

February 12, 2026 (PEN) The International Rescue Committee announced that hundreds of shelters were burned down in a camp for displaced people in Tawila town in North Darfur state, affecting more than 500 families, according to its director in western Sudan, Zeleke Bacha.

Bacha said the affected families had been displaced several times due to violence, and many had lost family members, noting that the fire had caused them to lose what remained of their possessions amid difficult humanitarian conditions characterized by a severe shortage of food, water and health care.

The committee stated that it is working in cooperation with local partners to provide urgent psychosocial support, medical consultations and emergency cash assistance, in addition to providing clean water to affected families, giving priority to those who have lost all their possessions again.

The International Rescue Committee stressed that humanitarian needs remain high, at a time when repeated shocks are exacerbating the situation of the most vulnerable populations.

According to the committee, it has expanded its operations since the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan in 2023 to meet increasing needs, and currently continues to provide support in the states of Blue Nile, Al Qadarif, Khartoum, River Nile, South Kordofan and White Nile. It is also working to re-establish its presence in Al Jazeera State, while expanding its presence in Darfur.
