The UN Security Council extends the peacekeeping mission in Abyei for another year.

November 15, 2025 (pen) The UN Security Council on Saturday approved a resolution to extend the mandate of the peacekeeping mission in the border region of Abyei for another year.

The draft resolution submitted by the United States was approved by 12 members, while Russia, China and Pakistan abstained from voting.

The US Deputy Representative to the United Nations, Dorothy Shea, welcomed the Council's approval of the mission's extension.

The resolution stipulated that the Council should consider "extending the mandate of the mission based on the tangible progress made by Sudan and South Sudan."

The resolution included three criteria that were not agreed upon by the majority of council members, but they voted in favor of them due to the importance of having the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei.

These standards call for the withdrawal of all unauthorized armed groups from Abyei, the resumption of meetings of the Joint Political and Security Mechanism between Sudan and South Sudan, and the establishment of a joint security police force for Abyei.
