UN official calls for urgent action to address hunger crisis in Sudan

August 3, 2024 (PEN) Acting Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Joyce Msuya called for immediate access for life-saving humanitarian assistance to Sudan.

The Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Clementine Nkweta Salami, stressed the importance of urgently increasing financial support from donors to prevent the spread of famine on a wider scale across Sudan, indicating that humanitarian organizations in Sudan have been working to expand the scope of the response over the past months, but the needs exceed current capacities.

She reported that about 25.6 million people are facing hunger, which is more than half of Sudan's population, calling for an end to conflicts and allowing aid to pass across borders and battle lines without hindrance.
