US official stresses need to address worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan

November 22, 2024 (PEN) The U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Agencies in Rome, Jeffrey Prescott, stressed the urgent need to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan after meeting with U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello and World Food Program Executive Director Cindy McCain.

Prescott noted that recent decisions to increase the flow of humanitarian aid through Port Sudan and expand access to border areas, such as the Adre crossing, were an important step to save lives, but stressed the need to intensify efforts to reach all those in need, including across borders and conflict lines.

The US Ambassador also renewed the US commitment to support the Sudanese people, and to work to ensure the delivery of urgent humanitarian aid, in addition to seeking to achieve progress on the diplomatic track to end the ongoing conflict.
