An international organization condemns drone strikes targeting areas in Kordofan.

December 9, 2025 (PEN) Plan International expressed its outrage at a series of drone attacks that targeted areas in South and North Kordofan states on December 4, including an attack on the Al-Hanan kindergarten in the town of Kologi, which, according to the organization, resulted in the killing of 96 people, including 43 children.

The organization said that four separate strikes were recorded on the same day, two of which hit the kindergarten, while a third strike targeted a hospital to which the wounded were taken, while a fourth strike hit a humanitarian convoy transporting food aid to North Darfur, resulting in the driver being seriously injured.

Mohammed Kamal, director of Plan International’s office in Sudan, added that “the tragedy is indescribable,” saying: “I am speechless… How can we give the children of Sudan hope for a better future if we cannot guarantee their safety inside a kindergarten?”

The organization noted that this attack comes just two weeks after the tenth anniversary of the Safe Schools Declaration, an international commitment signed by 121 countries to protect students, teachers and educational institutions during armed conflicts, stressing that the recent attacks reflect a worrying escalation of attacks on schools and the resulting catastrophic effects on children.

According to Emilia Sorrentino, the organization’s global head of humanitarian education, these attacks “are not just attacks on educational facilities, but attacks on hope,” noting that they “destroy the future, exacerbate the risks of exploitation, abuse and recruitment, and leave deep psychological scars on an entire generation.”

The organization renewed its call for all armed parties in Sudan to respect international humanitarian law, including the strict prohibition of targeting civilians and humanitarian workers, preventing the use of weapons that cause indiscriminate harm such as drones, and investigating serious violations against children.

The organization warned that the escalating violence in parts of Sudan, particularly in the Kordofan region, portends – in its words – “a new crisis unfolding before everyone’s eyes,” stressing that “the time has come for urgent action to save lives.”
