Cairo calls for a humanitarian truce in Sudan as a prelude to a ceasefire.

April 12, 2026 (PEN) Badr Abdel-Aty, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Immigration and Egyptian Expatriates Affairs, discussed during a telephone call with Annette Weber, the European Union's envoy to the Horn of Africa, developments in the region and ways to support security, stability and development.

The call addressed the ongoing preparations for the Berlin Ministerial Conference on Sudan scheduled for April 15, where the Egyptian minister stressed the need to preserve Sudan’s unity and territorial integrity, support its national institutions, and reject the establishment of any parallel entities.

Abdel-Aati stressed the importance of launching a purely Sudanese-owned political process to end the conflict, emphasizing the need to reach a humanitarian truce as a preliminary step towards a sustainable ceasefire, allowing aid to reach civilians and alleviating their suffering.

The Foreign Minister also condemned the violations committed against civilians in Sudan, describing them as a flagrant breach of international humanitarian law, and stressing the importance of protecting civilians and infrastructure.

These developments come at a time when the war in Sudan is approaching its fourth year, since it broke out on April 15, 2023, between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces. This war has caused the displacement of millions of civilians and the killing of thousands, as well as widespread destruction of infrastructure and has exacerbated the humanitarian situation in the country.
