The Committee to Protect Journalists calls for the release of a journalist detained in El Fasher.

May 2, 2026 (PEN) The Committee to Protect Journalists called for the immediate release of Sudanese journalist Muammar Ibrahim, who has been detained by the Rapid Support Forces in El Fasher since October 2025, amid a lack of any reliable information about his health, legal status, or conditions of detention.

The committee explained in a statement that Ibrahim’s detention comes in the context of escalating risks facing journalists in conflict zones, noting that it had been in contact with him before his arrest, during which he affirmed his commitment to remaining in El Fasher to convey the suffering of the population, saying: “Journalism here is not just a job, but a duty, even if it costs us our lives.”

The statement added that Ibrahim and six other journalists trapped in the city are facing dire humanitarian conditions, including ongoing violence, food shortages and continuous shelling, while they continue to cover events and report them to the world.

The committee demanded that Ibrahim’s safety be guaranteed and that he be released unconditionally, along with the protection of other detained journalists, warning of escalating violations against media professionals in Sudan.

This comes amid the ongoing war since April 2023, which has made Sudan one of the most dangerous environments for journalistic work, according to international organizations concerned with media freedom.
