A new wave of displacement hits North Kordofan

August 17, 2026 (PEN) The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced yesterday, Sunday, that 4,250 people were displaced from the villages of “Um Arda”, “Tameed”, and “Al-Khor Al-Abyad” in Sheikan locality, North Kordofan State, southern Sudan, during the days of August 14 and 15, as a result of the deteriorating security situation.

The organization said in a statement that the field teams of the Displacement Tracking Matrix estimated the number of displaced people, noting that the affected families moved to other areas within Sheikan locality and to the city of Omdurman, west of Khartoum.

She stressed that "the situation remains tense and volatile," explaining that she continues to closely monitor developments on the ground.

This comes after the "Emergency Lawyers" organization announced last Friday that 14 civilians were killed and dozens injured as a result of an attack carried out by the "Rapid Support Forces" on the Umm Arda area, southwest of Al-Abyad, the state capital.

Since April 2023, the two sides have been waging a war that has left tens of thousands dead and about 13 million displaced persons and refugees, according to UN and international estimates.
