Guterres condemns the killing of dozens in a bombing that targeted a hospital in East Darfur.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres (United Nations)

25 March 2026 (PEN) UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the killing of at least 60 people, including children and health workers, in a drone strike that targeted Al-Daein Teaching Hospital in East Darfur on 20 March, calling for an immediate halt to the escalation of fighting in Sudan.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric said in a press statement that since the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023, the World Health Organization has documented more than 200 attacks on health facilities in Sudan, resulting in the deaths of more than 2,000 people, indicating an escalation in the targeting of medical infrastructure.

Dujarric stressed that the Secretary-General calls on all parties to the conflict to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, which guarantees the protection of health workers and medical facilities, and prohibits targeting civilians and civilian objects.

Guterres reiterated his call for the parties to agree on a cessation of hostilities and return to the path of de-escalation, stressing the importance of engaging with mediators, including his personal envoy, to resume negotiations and reach a permanent ceasefire agreement that paves the way for a comprehensive Sudanese-led political process.

The spokesperson indicated that the United Nations is ready to support any serious steps aimed at ending the fighting in Sudan and putting the country on the path to lasting peace.
