International migration: 4.6 million Sudanese return, internal displacement declines

July 25, 2026 (PEN) The International Organization for Migration announced that the number of Sudanese returning to their original areas has risen to 4,649,056 people, compared to a decrease in the number of internally displaced persons to 8,685,273 displaced persons.

The organization said, based on data from about 13,000 locations in 185 localities across all 18 states of Sudan, that 82% of returnees came from areas of internal displacement, while 18% came from outside Sudan.

She explained that children under the age of 18 constitute about half of those affected, at a rate of 55% of the displaced and 50% of the returnees.

The number of displaced people recorded a decrease of 25% compared to the highest level of displacement, and 1% compared to the previous month, while the number of returnees increased by 5% compared to the previous month, and they are distributed across 74 localities in 9 states.

The organization noted that Khartoum and Gezira states received about three-quarters of the total returnees, after the security situation in them improved.

She stated that 87% of returning families attributed their decision to return to the improved security situation, following the Sudanese army's recapture of the states of Khartoum, Sennar and Al-Jazirah from the Rapid Support Forces.

This comes amid continued clashes in the Darfur region, Blue Nile State and the three Kordofan states since October 25, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis resulting from the ongoing war since April 2023, which has left tens of thousands dead and about 13 million displaced persons and refugees, according to UN estimates.
