International Organization for Migration: More than 219,000 people displaced in Kordofan since the escalation began

4 July 2026 (PEN) The International Organization for Migration (IOM) expressed grave concern on Friday about the deteriorating situation in Kordofan, where the number of newly displaced people has increased by 65% ​​since the escalation began in October 2025.

The organization said the number of newly displaced people rose from more than 132,000 in February 2026 to more than 219,000 by the end of June, confirming the worsening effects of the conflict on civilians.

The head of the International Organization for Migration's mission in Sudan, Mohamed Rifaat, said that "safe options have run out for families, and many who were previously displaced are now forced to flee again."

The organization noted that more than 100 displacement incidents were recorded during 9 months, and that the crisis extended to 14 states, with thousands of displaced people remaining in Kordofan since 2023.

In this context, the organization stated that, in cooperation with humanitarian partners, it had begun pre-positioning essential household items, personal hygiene supplies, and 600 emergency tents to enable a rapid response. However, it warned that severe funding shortages and insecurity were hindering humanitarian work.

The organization stated that Sudan urgently needs $90 million, given that 30 million people will need assistance in 2026, calling for the protection of civilians and ensuring unhindered access for aid.

Since the outbreak of the conflict in April 2023, Kordofan has been one of the most prominent displacement hotspots in Sudan, sheltering nearly one million internally displaced people, who constitute 11% of the total displaced people in the country, according to the organization.
