The Journalists Syndicate warns of a danger threatening the lives of 3 detained journalists.

May 16, 2026 (PEN) The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate warned of a serious deterioration in the health of journalists Muammar Ibrahim, Issam Mohamed Haroun, and photographer Abdel Aziz Mahmoud Saleh Arja, who are being held in detention, holding the Rapid Support Forces and security authorities fully responsible for their safety.

The union said in an urgent statement issued on Friday that journalist Muammar Ibrahim is suffering from a serious health deterioration inside one of the Rapid Support Forces detention centers in Nyala, noting that he has been deprived of medical care since his arrest in “Daqris” prison in Nyala on October 26, 2025.

She added that the fate of journalist Essam Mohamed Haroun remains unknown since his re-arrest in El Fasher on August 30, 2025, just 48 hours after his release following more than 8 months of enforced disappearance, stressing that his health condition is deteriorating.

The union also expressed concern about the deteriorating health of photographer Abdel Aziz Mahmoud Saleh Arja, who has been detained in Port Sudan since April 29, 2025.

The union demanded the immediate disclosure of Essam’s place of detention, the disclosure of the health status of the three detainees, the provision of urgent medical care for them, and their immediate and unconditional release.

She considered that what the detained journalists are being subjected to represents a systematic attack on press freedom and an attempt to intimidate journalists and silence free voices, calling on regional and international organizations to intervene urgently and exert pressure for their release.
