Teachers in Kassala escalate their strike: a full-scale strike with no return until demands are met.

July 5, 2026 (PEN) The Higher Escalation Committee of the Sudanese Teachers Committee in Kassala State announced yesterday, Saturday, a general strike in the eleven localities of the state, which will continue until Thursday, July 9, 2026.

The committee confirmed in a statement that there would be no return to schools before the legitimate demands were fully met.

The demands, as announced by the committee, are to adjust salaries to be in line with the current economic reality, for the government to commit to spending on education and not burden families with its costs, to eliminate the wage disparity between teachers in Kassala and their counterparts in the rest of the states, in addition to fulfilling all arrears and financial entitlements without reduction or delay.

The committee said it would monitor and expose to the public any attempts to break the strike, noting that it would hold a meeting on Saturday, July 11, to assess the situation and make subsequent decisions.

The decision to escalate came after a full month of the strike, during which the committee said the state government had not offered any real solutions and had merely made promises.

The committee criticized what it described as the silence of the state governor and the ministers of finance and education, and their failure to initiate a responsible dialogue.

The statement praised the stance of the teachers of the southern irrigation canals who refused financial offers to open schools, and asked: "Who will do justice to our brothers in other localities?"

The committee considered that "the battle is a battle for justice and dignity for teachers and education, for which the state bears full responsibility."
