More than 5,000 people displaced in West Darfur due to clashes in Bir Saliba

August 10, 2026 (PEN) 5,135 people have been displaced from 10 villages in Serba locality, West Darfur State, due to escalating security tensions and clashes in the Bir Saliba area, the International Organization for Migration announced Sunday.

In a statement, the organization said that the Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) teams estimated the number of affected families on August 8, noting that the majority of families had been displaced across the border into Chad.

She added that the latest wave of displacement came after a similar incident that occurred on August 4.

The governor of Darfur region, Minni Arko Minawi, announced on Saturday that the Sudanese army had repelled a large-scale attack launched by the Rapid Support Forces on the Bir Saliba area.

The International Organization for Migration announced last Thursday that about 6,600 people had been displaced from 11 other villages in the Serba locality in just two days.

The humanitarian crisis in Sudan is exacerbated by the ongoing war between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 2023, which has resulted in the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of approximately 13 million people, according to the United Nations.
