Sudanese children face hunger and disease: UN warns of escalating catastrophe

UNICEF confirmed that 17.3 million children are in urgent need of assistance (United Nations)

April 10, 2026 (PEN) The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) announced that some 33.7 million people in Sudan, including 17.3 million children, are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, as the humanitarian crisis worsens.

The organization explained in a statement that the escalation of conflict in Darfur, Kordofan and Blue Nile has caused the displacement of about 9.1 million people, while millions of children face the risks of malnutrition, disease and exploitation.

She added that the humanitarian situation is "extremely complex," with continued violence, displacement and disruption of basic services, especially in Kordofan, North Darfur and Blue Nile, which are witnessing a rapidly deteriorating situation for the most vulnerable populations.

She stressed that the lack of funding threatens the continuation of the response, noting that it needs $962.6 million, but has received only 16% of the required amount so far.

The organization called for a cessation of hostilities, protection of humanitarian workers, and the provision of flexible and sustainable funding to ensure the continuation of aid.
