Sudan's crisis is spreading regionally, putting increasing pressure on neighboring countries.

Sudanese refugees arrive in the border town of Adré in Chad (United Nations)

7 April 2026 (PEN) The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported that the humanitarian and security situation in a number of countries in the region, particularly Sudan and neighboring countries, deteriorated significantly in January, with continued displacement and rising humanitarian needs.

The commission explained that armed clashes in Sudan, particularly in Darfur and Kordofan, have led to new waves of displacement and damage to infrastructure, while the violence has forced families to flee to neighboring countries such as Chad.

In South Sudan, UNHCR recorded a significant increase in the number of new arrivals, exceeding 2,400 people in one month, indicating an escalating crisis on the border, while response operations face financial constraints that limit protection monitoring and service delivery.

She also noted that Chad continues to receive large numbers of Sudanese refugees, stressing the urgent need to expand humanitarian aid, given the growing international concern about the situation on the border.

In Libya, UNHCR data revealed that the vast majority of Sudanese refugees do not intend to return soon, due to the deteriorating security situation in Sudan, with most of them heading towards migration to Europe and North America.

The Commission noted the continued fragility of the security situation in the Central African Republic, and its deterioration in some areas of Uganda, in addition to the existence of urgent humanitarian needs in Ethiopia and Egypt, especially in the areas of protection and basic assistance.

She stressed that the increasing regional displacement reflects the worsening Sudanese crisis and calls for an urgent increase in international funding and humanitarian response.
