More than 148,000 people vaccinated against diphtheria in Karari and Bahri

August 18, 2026 (PEN) The Khartoum State Ministry of Health announced that 148,055 people have been vaccinated against diphtheria in the Karari and Bahri localities over the past two days, as part of a campaign aimed at containing the epidemic and limiting its spread.

The campaign targeted the age group from 5 to 20 years, achieving initial coverage of 26.7% of the total targeted number, which is 554,505 people.

The Federal Chamber for Combating Diphtheria called on families to cooperate with vaccination teams and to bring their children to receive the vaccine through health centers and mobile teams.

The chamber confirmed that the vaccine used is safe and effective, and provides direct protection against infection, urging citizens to keep their vaccination cards for use in the next stages of the campaign.

She explained that she monitors the campaign’s field performance indicators daily, including geographical coverage of targeted areas, home visits, health awareness activities, and monitoring any side effects or new cases.

The chamber also indicated that it is monitoring the availability of medical supplies and consumables, within the framework of Khartoum State’s plan to control diphtheria outbreaks and achieve the required community immunity.
