Sudanese journalist wins prestigious international award

Journalist Issa Dafallah (Sudanese Journalists Syndicate)

April 21, 2026 (PEN) The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate announced that journalist Issa Dafallah has won The Stringer Foundation Award for 2026, according to the New York Times, in an international honor that highlights freelance journalists working in high-risk environments.

The union stated that the award aims to support and honor journalists who continue their work under difficult circumstances, noting that the list of winners includes 25 journalists selected from nearly 800 applications from around the world. The awards ceremony is scheduled for November 2026.

The union explained that the award focuses on journalists who face physical threats, legal pressures and financial difficulties, often without institutional support, considering that Issa Dafallah’s victory reflects his ability to convey the suffering of Sudanese people during the war, and to provide field accounts from the heart of the events.

She added that this honor is not just an individual achievement, but also an international recognition of the role of Sudanese journalists in one of the most dangerous environments for journalistic work, where security and professional challenges are escalating.

The union affirmed that the award represents a message about the need to protect Sudanese journalists and enable them to perform their work freely and safely, stressing that Sudanese journalism will continue to document violations and convey the suffering of civilians despite the risks.
