The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate mourns the death of journalist Al-Fatih Mutawakkil Al-Mardi

11 July 2026 (PEN) The Sudanese Journalists Syndicate mourned the passing of journalist Al-Fatih Mutawakkil Al-Mardi, who died on Monday evening, 6 July 2026, in the British capital, London, after a career full of struggle and defense of press freedom.

The union said that Al-Mardi was one of the symbols of contemporary Sudanese journalism, and was known for his courage in the face of oppression, stressing that prisons and torture did not deter him from continuing the path of truth, justice and transparency.

She explained that Al-Mardi started his work at the newspaper “Al-Hadaf”, held several positions, and was one of the most prominent opponents of the May regime.

She added that he played a pivotal role in establishing the first legitimate elected journalists’ union after the April 1985 uprising, and also contributed to the founding of the “Victims of Torture Organization” in London, and continued to monitor the violations of dictatorial regimes until his last days.

The union offered its condolences to the family of the deceased, his colleagues and loved ones, asking God to have mercy on him.
