The United Nations expresses concern over the killing of civilians and the escalation of fighting in Kordofan and Darfur.

June 2, 2026 (PEN) The United Nations expressed grave concern over the killing of dozens of civilians in Sudan in recent days, as fighting continues to escalate in the states of Kordofan and Darfur.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric condemned the killing of at least 10 civilians in clashes in the city of Bara in North Kordofan state, noting that humanitarian workers confirmed the displacement of families and the worsening needs of the population for assistance.

The International Organization for Migration reported that more than 2,200 people have been displaced in South Kordofan in recent days, seeking safety, according to field reports.

Meanwhile, UN agencies warned of a suspected cholera outbreak in central Kordofan, with 300 cases and 77 suspected deaths reported.

The agencies noted that supply shortages are hindering the response, coinciding with the start of the rainy season which increases the risk of waterborne diseases spreading, despite authorities announcing the end of the outbreak last March.

This comes amid continued fighting between the army and the Rapid Support Forces since April 15, 2023, which has killed thousands of civilians and displaced millions.
