The Security Council warns of the risk of a ground attack on Al-Abyad and calls for it to be stopped immediately.

June 21, 2026 (PEN) Members of the UN Security Council, in a statement on Saturday, expressed concern about the Rapid Support Forces' large military buildup around the city of El Obeid, warning of the risk of a possible ground attack and the imminent danger of mass atrocities that it might entail.

The Council called for an immediate halt to any attack on the city, reiterating its deep concern about the continued violence in Sudan, particularly the escalating fighting in the Kordofan states, which threatens to worsen the already dire humanitarian situation.

The Security Council called on all parties to the conflict to immediately cease fighting, comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, and fulfill their commitments in the "Jeddah Declaration".

The Council expressed concern about the increasing use of drones, including attacks by the Rapid Support Forces in El Obeid, and their growing use throughout the country.

He called for an investigation into the abuses and violations and for holding the perpetrators accountable, stressing the need to ensure safe and unhindered access for humanitarian aid and to enable civilians to pass safely in accordance with international law.

The Council urged member states to refrain from external interference that fuels the conflict, to support peace efforts, and to implement relevant Council resolutions, foremost among them Resolution 2791 of 2025.

The Security Council reaffirmed its commitment to the sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity of Sudan, and reiterated its rejection of the establishment of any parallel governing authority in areas under the control of the Rapid Support Forces.
