Washington warns of the risk of mass atrocities in El Obeid.

June 23, 2026 (PEN) The United States yesterday expressed grave concern over the mobilization of the Rapid Support Forces and allied forces around the city of El Obeid, warning of an imminent risk of mass atrocities against civilians.

The US State Department said in a statement that there are disturbing signs of possible attacks on civilian objects and an escalation of conflict in Kordofan, exacerbating the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Sudan.

The United States called on the Rapid Support Forces and their allies to cease any actions that endanger civilians or impede the delivery of aid, stressing the need for warring parties to adhere to international humanitarian law to protect civilians.

Washington reiterated its position that there is no military solution to the crisis in Sudan, calling for a negotiated settlement without preconditions.

The United States affirmed its continued commitment to working with international partners to support a humanitarian truce and a civilian transition process that achieves peace and stability.

She stressed that the war had caused heavy losses borne by civilians, calling for immediate access to aid and urgent steps to prevent further atrocities and suffering.
