UN official: Sudan lost 25% of its gross domestic product, and the continuation of the war will make recovery more difficult

April 15, 2024 (PEN) Ahead of the Paris conference on Sudan, Dr. Abdullah Dardari, Director of the Regional Office for Arab States of the United Nations Development Programme, said that Sudan lost 25 percent of its gross domestic product during one year of war. He explained in an interview with UN News that countries do not lose 25 percent of their output in one year unless the situation there is devastating.

During the dialogue, Al-Dardari warned of the continued erosion of the Sudanese economy, if the war continues, which he said will make recovery more difficult, in light of the erosion of available resources, recovery capabilities, production capacity, and infrastructure. Al-Dardari highlighted the efforts made by the United Nations to strengthen the ability of local communities in Sudan - whether displaced or host communities - to withstand during this very difficult stage.
